Out with the Old, In with the New

My regular blog is dead, at least until I can gain access to the back room via FTP. Since I was unable to log in this morning, I fear it could take a while.

When it went kaput, I was sort of panicked - I mean, think about it. There's nearly 8 years of crap stored there. My thoughts on nothing; my thoughts on Beau in the early "we're not dating" days, my wedding planning, the wedding itself, my pregnancies and my kids (and the separate blogs that resulted); hundreds of photos; dozens of recipes. All of it inaccessible because I was too busy with life to do the work of maintaining the software. Two years of neglect resulted in a major compromise and down she went.

So in the past week I have been considering letting it go. I'm considering figuring out how to gather the data to keep for myself, but letting the domain and those blogs go. I spend most of my online time on Facebook, but there are times when I still wish to flesh something out further than a short FB status post. But this means starting over, starting fresh, building a new audience. Is it worth the time?

It's something to ponder.

You might find starting over easier and more satisfying than you think. I did it with the Gazette. I later went back and added a handful of old posts that I felt were worth saving (mostly for my own benefit), but the vast majority I found were quite expendable.

But blogging and FB are two completely different animals for me, and serve two purposes and audiences.

I have to admit that I kind of like the idea of starting fresh. I'm definitely leaning more toward letting the old blog go (although try to retrieve the data since it is my personal journal for those years) and just keep this one.

And yes, they are different animals. I plan to post at each differently than I have to date as well - less at FB and more here. We'll see how that goes.

I'm all for maintaining the blog - I was bummed yesterday when I tried to pop by the other and it was down, I figured it meant you'd given up the ghost.

That said, if you're really wanting an audience, then you need to at least post a note saying you posted to FB, otherwise your readership will go to pot. (I never had a huge readership, but I think at this point I'm down to my sister and my mom, cause I don't really want to link my blog to my real name, though for all I know it's not really that big a secret anymore.)

I have considered linking it to FB, but I still blog anonymously for the most part, too, so I hesitate.

I think my readers at this point are mostly family and folks who have been around for the long haul.
